Wednesday declared a public holiday

(Oct 26 2017 at 11:45pm)

The government has declared Wednesday, October 25 a public holiday.

According to the gazette notice signed by acting Interior CS Fred Matiang’i, the public holiday is to accord Kenyans the opportunity to participate in the fresh presidential election on Thursday, 26th October.

“In exercise of powers conferred by section 3 of the Public Holidays Act, declares that Wednesday, the 25th October, 2017 be a public holiday to accord Kenyans the opportunity to participate in the Fresh Presidential Election,” read the gazette notice.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission and Jubilee have maintained that the fresh election will go on as planned even after National Super Alliance (NASA) presidential candidate Raila Odinga has since withdrawn from the polls.

NASA leaders have continued to urge their supporters to boycott the election.

Acting CS Matiang’i Monday held a security meeting with the 47 county commissioners and said there are elaborate plans to secure the poll.

“It is the right of every citizen to participate or not to participate either as a voter or a candidate in an election. However, it is an offence under the Election Offences Act (No. 37 of 2016) to use force or violence to prevent another person from voting”, he warned.

He however remained tight-lipped on the number of security personnel deployed countrywide to safeguard the poll.

Thursday was also declared a public holiday last week.
