MTN reduces its data plan

(May 07 2016 at 09:14pm)

MTN had slashed the cost of some of its data plans to keep it in competition with other networks who had for a while had much cheaper plans available. Two of the new plans – the 3.75GB for N2000 and 1.3GB for N1000 were yesterday again altered.

Following the alteration, N2,000 will now get you 3.5GB (200MB less than before), while the N1000 plan has been bumped up by N200MB to 1.5GB, the activation codes remain the same.

I reached out to a source at MTN to find out why the plans were altered, if the plans were a promo of sorts, or whether the new pricing was here to stay and the response was that the alterations were as a direct consequence of the market’s response to its initial slashes.

I was also assured that the new, cheaper plans were the norm going forward and that the four plans that had been reviewed already were a test of sorts to see how the market will react to a proposed full downward review of all its plans which was in the works and just waiting approval “from above.”

With MTN’s 4G/LTE service launching in just a few weeks, one wonders whether these new prices will be carried over to LTE plans, my gut says no, but one is allowed to hope right?jhj
