Wenger :Luis Suarez agreed personal terms with Arsenal

Mar 24 2017 at 03:34pm

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has revealed former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez agreed personal terms with the club in 2013 before opting to remain with Liverpool for a season.

Luis Suarez reportedly had a £40 million release clause. Arsenal offered £40,000,001, a fee that angered Liverpool's previous owner John Henry.

Liverpool refused to sell Suarez to Arsenal that season, with the Uruguay forward later revealing Steven Gerrard persuaded him to snub a move to Arsenal.

A year later Liverpool sold Suarez to Barcelona for £65 million after he was accused of biting Italy defender Leonardo Bonucci at the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Wenger spoke to beIN sport: “We reached an agreement with the player. Arsenal were wrongly advised that he had a clause, with a minimal clause, but we definitely had an agreement with the player. You can ask him.

“I am convinced he wanted to join Arsenal and then they sold him.
They kept him one more year, improved his contract and assured him of a move a year later to a club abroad.”

Wenger missed out on securing Luis Suarez that season despite claims he agreed personal terms with the club. Liverpool were not only pissed about the offer from Arsenal but they refused to sell their star player to a rival club, something Wenger has learnt from after selling his key players to Manchester City and Manchester United.
