man broke into White house with a knife and message for the president

Sep 21 2014 at 04:19am

The intruder who scaled a White House fence and made it
through the front doors was an Army veteran diagnosed with combat trauma who made a bizarre statement after he was arrested, according to a family member and authorities.

Secret Service officials said that Omar J. Gonzalez climbed a
fence on the north side of the White House at about 7.20pm
on Friday (local time) and sprinted roughly 100 metres and
into the building before he was captured by officers.

"Gonzalez failed to comply with responding Secret Service
Uniformed Division Officers' verbal commands, and was
physically apprehended after entering the White House North Portico doors," agency officials said in a statement on
Saturday.

According to court papers, Gonzalez was carrying a folding
knife with a 3-1/2-inch (8.9cm) long serrated blade and
wanted to get a message to the president.
"After he was apprehended, Omar Gonzalez told United States
Secret Service Agent Lee Smart that he was concerned that
the atmosphere was collapsing and (he) needed to get the
information to the President of the United States so that he
could get the word out to the people," the affidavit said.
